The Carnatic Music Fan

September 23, 2004

Warm welcome to Shruti

I tuned in to Shruti, the 24-hour Carnatic Music channel on WorldSpace Satellite radio, for the first time last night (September 23). I'm so glad Carnatic Music is back on WorldSpace - it's the main reason that I use Worldspace.

(It seems the channel was launched on September 20. Looks like I missed it for 3 days ;-( )

With Gandharv going 100% Hindustani and even KL Radio knocking off its great 1 hour "Ragam Sangeetham" program (which used to be aired thrice a day - w/o repeats), I had gone back to CDs and tapes...

Hope Shruti will put out fresh content - not canned repeats..which was the bane of Anthar Ganharv & Ranjani - the erstwhile CM programs on Gandharv.

Here's wishing the new channel "immortality" and all success.

Here's what the WorldSpace site says about Shruti:

This is where the voices of legends sing on. This is a channel that plays Carnatic music only. On a night you can't sleep, tune in at three am and let MS's distinctive voice lull you to the next morning. On a warm afternoon, let Semmangudi's renditions of keeravani or mukhari wash over you. Here's your chance to listen to the legends. 24-hours a day. Ariyakudi Ramanujam Iyengar, Alathur brothers, Semmangudi Srinivas Iyer M S Subbulakshmi, DK Pattammal, ML Vasanthakumari — and more. From the traditionalists to the innovators, everyone finds a home on Shruti.
